More Childhood Education Effective elementary school education — education that empowers and elevates students of all backgrounds and abilities—depends on student-centered methods, individualized approaches, cultural responsiveness, and specialized pedagogies based in research, theory, and practice. Students shape their course of study to fit individual professional and pedagogical goals. Program tracks in Special Education provide teachers with the opportunity to specialize in clinically-effective practices for engaging students with Learning Disabilities or Behavioral Disorders.

Regardless of specialization, graduates become leaders in all types of educational settings, as teachers, mentors, faculty development facilitators, instructional designers, inclusion and behavior support specialists, college instructors, principals, and even founders of their own schools and programs.

Students in our counseling programs are dedicated to helping others live full and enriched lives. Our programs reflect that principle. Through coursework and field placement, students develop the skills, cultural competencies, and self-awareness necessary for building collaborative relationships with clients in a variety of settings.

Our supportive, knowledgeable faculty introduce students to the most advanced counseling theories. Throughout their studies, students apply their learning and gain clinical experience in supervised practice throughout the city, in a wide variety of agency placement sites.

Students learn to apply advanced knowledge and research findings to practice through coursework and hours of supervised clinical practicum experience. The program consists of core courses taken with other graduate students in nursing, courses taken in the School of Public Health, specialization courses, and elective courses.

Electives may be chosen from any graduate program at Hunter College. Course descriptions are available in the graduate section of the Hunter College Course Catalog. All core nursing and public health courses must be completed prior to beginning practicum courses.
